Choosing the Right Dairy Meal
What to look for on the label so every shilling translates into more litres.
Not all dairy meals are equal. Two bags can cost the same but give very different results because of what's actually inside. Here's how to read a dairy meal label like a pro.
Check the crude protein
For lactating cows, aim for 16–18% crude protein. Below 14% and you're really just feeding maize germ — your cow won't hit her potential. Premium dairy meals like Fugo High Yielder sit at 18%.
Look at the fibre
Crude fibre should be 7–10%. Too low and you risk acidosis; too high (above 12%) usually means the meal is bulked up with cheap maize cobs or rice husks that the cow can't fully digest.
Minerals and vitamins matter
A good dairy meal includes calcium (0.8–1.2%), phosphorus, magnesium and trace minerals plus vitamins A, D and E. If the label is silent on these, top up with a separate mineral lick.
Smell, feel and freshness
Open the bag at the shop. Good dairy meal smells sweet and molasses-like, feels slightly oily, and is free of mould or weevils. Always check the manufacture date — dairy meal loses vitamins after 60 days.
We stock Fugo, Unga, Pembe and other trusted brands in calf, heifer, dairy and high-yielder grades. Ask us for the right grade for each stage of your herd.
